The spirit of our school

There is a certain something around us. It might be the spirit of the old times captured in the walls. We, the teachers, give you a bit of ourselves that stays in you, the students, even after your final exams. Recently one girl, a former student, rushed into my classroom, kissed me on both cheeks, said she was fine and rushed out. That is the spirit of Karlovci Grammar School .

Biserka Nenadovic, teacher, 2003

The spirit of Karlovci philological grammar school, the eventful history and the very feeling that you get when you are in the oldest educational institution of the Serbs cannot leave you indifferent. Everybody who comes to this school does not only enter one educational institution, but a museum as well. That feeling makes you feel closer to the school. It is overwhelming and makes you come to feel the atmosphere again when you finish school, or if you are a retired teacher. There is always that special feeling that forces you to come back.

Rade Zejak, teacher

This can be put in two words: teachers - friends. It is something precious, something that stays as the most precious memory.

Robert Kolar, 1994

For me, the most important thing is not so much the old and beautiful building as the spirit that we have been all trying to maintain. It is this fantastic friendship and the sense of belonging to one big family where there is no barrier between teachers and students.

There is something here we could call 'CULTIVATING PEOPLE'. It means that our task is to assist students in becoming individual masterpieces because each person is a different story and needs to be developed in a special way.

Lada Jagust, teacher, 1997

All we can say about this famous spirit is that it is everywhere, in every classroom, in every corner of this building. It's to be found in the schoolyard among the giggling girls, and among the teachers drinking coffee during their break. It goes on school trips with us, it is hidden in the register books when we are not at school, and it is even there when we have other things on our mind. It is something you cannot define or explain. You simply feel it.

Neda Nedovic, former student, 2003
